Hurricane Katrina Spares DPS - Mississippi

As Hurricane Katrina moved ashore she wrecked the coasts of Mississippi and Louisiana as has been well documented in every form of media in existence. The devastation left in Katrina's wake is virtually indescribable and this storm will most likely become known as the worst natural disaster in American history. The loss of property is staggering and the loss of human life is unfathomable.

DPS - Mississippi was fortunate to be far enough north of the coast together with being far enough west of the path of the storm to avoid any structural damage from Katrina as she moved northward through Mississippi. The dairy was without power for almost four days but is fortunately very close to a major transmission line and power was restored much quicker than in many areas that are still without power even at this writing.

We were not completely unscathed, however, as the standby generator is ample to run the essentials to milk the herd and cool the milk. The fans and misters in the freestall barns were inoperative during the power outage, and the cows responded with a drop in production of nearly 9 pounds per day! When power was restored and the cooling systems were up and functioning again, the cows were obviously pleased. Within a couple of days, about 75% of the drop had been recovered with daily improvement still taking place.

The wonderful employees of DPS-MS are to be commended for their extra efforts during the storm and in the days following. Things are returning to normal due the excellent teamwork and unselfish laboring of the entire staff.

DPS wishes to express its heartfelt sympathy to those who were not as fortunate, and encourages everyone to get involved in the Katrina relief efforts.
