Don Shumaker
Consultant/Dairy Nutritionist
Don Shumaker was born and raised in northern Mississippi. Watching his father work in the dairy nutrition business, Don developed an early love for animal nutrition. Upon reception of his high school diploma, Don enrolled in Mississippi State University to further his education. From summer 1972 through spring of 1973, Don was a herdsman for the MSU dairy herd. In 1973, Don completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Production, and was hired as a herdsman for Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Newton, MS, a position he maintained until June 1975. At that time, Don returned to Mississippi State to pursue a masters degree in Dairy Cattle Feeding and Management. While completing his MS degree, Don served as herdsman for the MSU herd from 1975 until September 1981.
In 1981, Don took a position with Cargill Grain Company in Tampa, Florida as a Dairy Nutrition Consultant. During his employment with Cargill, Don's knowledge of the animal nutrition field was furthered and he consistently ranked in the top 3 in sales nationwide. In 1985, Don traveled to Vienna, Georgia and accepted a position as Dairy Nutritionist/Management Consultant at Ration Maker Products South, Inc. For the next three years, Don was responsible for product design for mineral and vitamin products for the company's dairy products line, direct support and sales to large, in-house accounts, and provided technical support to the sales staff. Before his departure from the company, Don designed and developed a Dairy Feed & Management Program for the company's sales efforts. Don's professional career placed him in Eatonton, Georgia in 1988 as a General Manager/Nutritionist for Eatonton Dairy Co-Op Feed Company. For the next year, Don's responsibilities included the production of 60,000 tons annually of dairy feeds for a farmer-owned co-op feed mill, all purchasing and forward contracting of feedstuffs and feed ration formulation, the bottom line P&L or the $10+ million per year business, and the supervision of 25 employees.
In 1989, Don returned to his native Mississippi to live out his passion for dairy nutrition. Don currently works as a Dairy Nutrition Consultant for Dairy Management Systems, Inc. Don advises and consults with dairy farmers and feed mills that sell to dairy farmers. He designs feed formulas and plans management programs for optimal milk production. Don analyzes dairy herd records and advises dairy farmers on commodity purchasing, market contracts, and selling. His creative sales experience, successful management background, thorough knowledge of the dairy industry, and strong people skills have made him a leader in his field.
Don first teamed with Aurora Dairy in 1994. Don's education and experience made him a credible candidate as Aurora's nutrition consultant. For the past ten years, Don has aided in the increase and maintenance of Aurora's milk production for the nutritional side. He is a trusted and respected nutritionist that is welcomed on every Aurora farm he visits.
Don has two grown sons and currently lives in Ecru, Mississippi with his wife Donna and their two daughters.
